Description
Step inside Tennessee’s largest house museum and wander restored rooms filled with original art and furnishings. Discover the story of Adelicia Acklen and 19th-century Nashville.
Begin your journey through Nashville’s history with an entry ticket to Belmont Mansion, the largest pre-Civil War house still standing in the city. Located on the scenic campus of Belmont University, this Italian villa-style mansion invites you to explore the lives of all those who lived and worked on the estate, both free and enslaved.
As you make your way through the grand halls and restored rooms, admire original and period furniture, artwork, and statuary that bring the antebellum era to life. Learn about the mansion’s transformation from a lavish summer home to Union army headquarters during the Civil War, and later, a women’s college and seminary. The estate once boasted extensive gardens, an art gallery, a bowling alley, and even a private zoo, reflecting the Acklen family’s vision for a truly unique residence.
Your visit offers a self-guided experience, allowing you to move at your own pace and focus on the details that interest you most. Interpretive displays and knowledgeable staff (on hand for questions) help you uncover stories from all who shaped Belmont Mansion, including the community’s ongoing efforts to preserve this historic landmark. The experience concludes at the mansion, leaving you free to continue exploring the university campus or return to downtown Nashville at your leisure.
