Description

Discover the "Crown Jewel" of San Diego on a guided walking tour of Balboa Park and Bankers Hill. Cross historic bridges and admire the elite 19th-century architecture.
Begin your walking tour at Balboa Park, the "Crown Jewel" of San Diego. Skip the indoor exhibits and focus on the intricate facades and lush landscapes of this National Historic Landmark. Stroll along the El Prado Walkway to see the ornate Spanish Colonial Revival buildings built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition.

Next, view the Botanical Building and Lily Pond, one of the largest lath structures in the world. Then, head to the Alcazar Garden, modeled after the gardens of Seville, Spain, featuring exquisite turquoise and yellow Moorish tiles and a shady pergola.

Walk across the 1,500-foot-long Cabrillo Bridge, the grand entrance to the park, offering views of the 163 freeway below and the San Diego skyline. As you exit the park via Laurel Street, enter Bankers Hill, a neighborhood known for its historic "mansion row."

Admire the Long-Waterman House, a spectacular 1889 Queen Anne-style Victorian mansion featuring a "witch’s hat" turret and intricate wood detailing. See the Marston House, an estate that marks the transition of the neighborhood's elite architecture at the turn of the century.

Walk north on Front Street toward Walnut Avenue to see late-Victorian homes from the 1890s, including the Wiard Residence and the Moore House. Conclude your tour by crossing two of the city's most unique pedestrian spans.

Cross the Quince Street Bridge, built in 1905, one of San Diego's few remaining wooden trestle bridges. It spans 236 feet across the lush Maple Canyon. Finally, walk to the Spruce Street Suspension Bridge, a hidden gem built in 1912. This footbridge sways gently as you walk 70 feet above Kate Sessions Canyon.
