2-Day Simien Mountains Tour from Gondar to Chennek:
Experience one of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes on this 2-day adventure into Simien Mountains National Park. Starting from Gondar, this short yet immersive journey takes you deep into the heart of the Simien Mountains, where towering cliffs, sweeping valleys, and rare wildlife await.
Perfect for travelers with limited time, this tour combines scenic drives, moderate hiking, and exceptional wildlife encounters, all within a UNESCO-listed natural wonder.
Day 1: Gondar – Debark – Sankaber – Chennek:
Your journey begins with an early morning drive from Gondar to the Simien Mountains via Debark, the gateway to the park. After completing park formalities, continue driving into the mountains, stopping along the way to enjoy breathtaking viewpoints over the escarpment.
At Sankaber, begin your hike through rolling highlands and dramatic ridges. Along the route, you will encounter large troops of Gelada baboon grazing peacefully and possibly spot other wildlife unique to the region.
Continue by vehicle deeper into the park toward Chennek, one of the best areas for wildlife viewing. Upon arrival, enjoy a short afternoon hike around the camp, where you may see the rare Walia ibex clinging to steep cliffs, and, with some luck, the elusive Ethiopian wolf.
Take in the stunning sunset over the rugged peaks before settling in for the night.
Overnight: Chennek Camp
Day 2: Chennek – Mount Bwahit – Gondar:
Distance (hiking): 9 km round trip
Hiking time: 4 hours
Summit altitude: 4,430 m
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
Begin the day early at Chennek Camp, one of the best wildlife-viewing areas in Simien Mountains National Park. After breakfast, set out on a scenic hike toward Mount Bwahit, the second-highest peak in the country.
The trail gradually ascends through open Afro-alpine terrain, offering wide views of dramatic escarpments and deep valleys. The landscape is rugged yet accessible, making it an excellent short high-altitude trek for those seeking both challenge and reward.
Along the way, there are strong chances of spotting endemic wildlife such as the Walia ibex, often seen on steep cliffs near Chennek. You may also encounter Gelada baboon groups and, with luck, the elusive Ethiopian wolf in the higher plateau areas.
Reaching the summit of Mount Bwahit (4,430 m) rewards you with breathtaking 360-degree views over the Simien Mountains—an unforgettable highlight of the trek.
After spending time at the top for photos and rest, descend back to Chennek Camp. From there, begin the return drive to Gondar, with scenic stops along the way.
