Description

Discover why Alsace is France’s most surprising food region, one bite at a time: bretzels, local wine, pork shank, gingerbread and a secret dish in Strasbourg’s old town.
Strasbourg’s Grande Île is an island ringed by the River Ill, whose lanes, canals and cathedral square have fed the city for centuries. Walk it with a local guide and you start to see a place shaped by two cultures, where bakeries sell bretzels next to French pastries and every family seems to have an opinion on the best kougelhopf.

Your tour starts the way an Alsatian day should, with a glossy, salted bretzel shared straight from a local bakery. From there, step into a small charcuterie that stocks a sausage for almost every occasion in the region, and taste a selection of local cold cuts with a glass of Alsatian white wine, the pairing locals reach for first.

Next comes the heartiest stop of the day. At a traditional brasserie pouring beer from one of the region’s oldest family breweries, you’ll sit down to slow-cooked pork shank with spaetzle, Alsace’s soft egg noodles, and a locally brewed beer. Then a secret dish arrives at the table, and that’s all we’ll say about it.

Your guide leads you on into La Petite France, the old quarter of tanners, millers and fishermen, where timber-framed houses lean over the canals. Here a gingerbread specialist treats pain d’épices as a craft, blending honey and warm spices into something far removed from the supermarket version. A neighbourhood boulangerie follows with kougelhopf, the tall, fluted brioche studded with raisins and almonds, before a delicate macaron ends things on a French note.

Between bites, your guide tells the story of a city that changed hands between France and Germany more than once, and shows you how that history ended up on the plate. On this Secret Food Tours walk, every stop is a place the people of Strasbourg rely on, so you’ll finish near the cathedral full, a little wiser about Alsace and with a list of places to come back to.
