Led by a historian with a PhD in Contemporary History, author of two books on Basque history published by Routledge, and with more than a decade of experience living in the Basque Country, this tour is designed to help you understand the city — and the fascinating history of the Basque Country around it.

As you walk through the medieval streets and historic squares, explore the people, events, and changes that have shaped Vitoria-Gasteiz and the wider Basque Country, from medieval origins to the present day.

This is more than a sightseeing walk. It's a chance to look beyond the obvious, ask questions, and have a conversation about the places you visit, while gaining a deeper understanding of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Basque Country.

Vitoria-Gasteiz has a beautifully preserved medieval old town, centuries of rich and complex history, and almost none of the tourist crowds you will find in Bilbao or San Sebastián.

Your guide is an Irish historian who has lived in the Basque Country since 2014 and in Vitoria-Gasteiz specifically since 2018. He is one of a handful of historians writing in English who specializes in contemporary Basque history, Basque nationalism, and the Basque Country’s complex and often turbulent relationship with Spain.

This tour starts and ends at the Monument to the Battle of Vitoria, located in the centre of Plaza de la Virgen Blanca.
