Description
Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo Island, Taka Makassar, Manjarite, Manta Point, Kelor, and Kalong in one day — speedboat by day, wooden boat for the flying-fox sunset.
Most Komodo day trips cover six stops and end mid-afternoon. This one covers eight and runs to sunset — and it uses two different boats to do it.
The morning belongs to speed. You leave Labuan Bajo before dawn on an air-conditioned speedboat with an indoor toilet, reaching Padar Island while the light is still soft and the staircase is still quiet. From the top, three curved bays open up beneath you, each with a differently coloured shoreline. Then comes Pink Beach, where fragments of red coral ground into the sand really do turn the waterline rose, and Komodo Island, where a national park ranger walks you through dragon territory on foot. The dragons roam freely, so nothing is staged and nothing is guaranteed — which is exactly what makes seeing one memorable.
The middle of the day is spent in the water. Taka Makassar is a crescent of sand that rises out of the open sea at low tide and disappears again a few hours later. At Manjarite the coral garden sits close enough to the surface to see without diving down, and lunch is cooked and served on board while you dry off. Manta Point comes next, where reef mantas glide through the channel with the current.
Then the pace changes. At Kelor Island you step off the speedboat and onto a traditional Flores wooden boat — open deck, bean bags, no engine noise once the anchor is down. You sail slowly toward Kalong Island, and at dusk thousands of flying foxes lift out of the mangroves and cross the sky above the boat, in a stream that takes around twenty minutes to pass. It is the reason the day runs long, and it is the part guests talk about afterwards.
One local guide from Flores stays with your group across both boats for the whole day. Lunch is cooked on board, with vegetarian, vegan, halal, and gluten-free versions on request. Photos and video from the day, including underwater footage, are shared with your group afterwards at no extra cost.
