Description
Join a guided tour in Kanazawa and make your own rakugan sweets. Enjoy matcha, explore historic districts, visit a samurai residence, and savor a seasonal Kaiseki bento box lunch.
We invite you on an unforgettable journey through Kanazawa, where you can experience Japanese confectionery making, samurai culture, geisha traditions, and seasonal Japanese cuisine.
Throughout the tour, you will be accompanied by an English-speaking tea ceremony instructor who will explain the cultural connections linking tea, Japanese sweets, samurai and geisha cultures, and cuisine. Going beyond mere sightseeing, the instructor’s stories and cultural insights will ensure that each experience leaves a lasting impression on your heart.
The journey begins at a long-established Japanese confectionery shop with over 400 years of history. Here, you will try your hand at making Rakugan—one of Japan’s quintessential traditional sweets—using authentic wooden molds. Afterward, you will savor your handmade creation alongside freshly whisked matcha while learning about the traditions and etiquette of the Japanese tea ceremony.
Next, you will visit a beautifully preserved samurai residence featuring a traditional tea room and Japanese garden. You will then stroll through Kazuemachi, one of Kanazawa’s historic geigsha districts. As you wander past atmospheric streetscapes and wooden teahouses, you will gain a sense of how samurai culture, geisha traditions, and the culture of Chanoyu (tea ceremony) have shaped Kanazawa’s unique heritage.
The tour concludes with a beautifully presented "seasonal kaiseki -style bento" prepared by one of Kanazawa’s most popular restaurants—an establishment where reservations are often fully booked six months or more in advance. The menu changes with the seasons, utilizing carefully selected local ingredients. During the meal, the tea ceremony instructor will explain the seasonal ingredients, traditional cooking methods, tableware, and the philosophy behind Japanese cuisine, helping you to deeply appreciate the culinary experience beyond just the taste.
Before departing, you will also have the opportunity to view a collection of traditional wooden molds used for making Japanese sweets. This promises to be a rare opportunity to experience the profound craftsmanship that sustains Kanazawa’s celebrated Japanese confectionery culture.
We invite you on a journey that transcends the boundaries of a typical sightseeing tour—an experience where you will encounter the traditions, craftsmanship, and stories that shape the Kanazawa of today.
