Embark on a 2-day slow boat journey from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang. Enjoy a hotel pickup, a scenic ride to the border, and a relaxing cruise along the Mekong River.
Begin your journey with a hotel pickup in Chiang Rai between 5:00 AM and 5:45 AM. Travel in a comfortable air-conditioned van or minibus to the Thai-Lao border. Relax, chat with fellow travelers, or simply enjoy the morning scenery of northern Thailand’s countryside.
Arrive at the Chiang Khong immigration checkpoint at 7:30 AM. After completing Thai immigration and passport procedures, take an official shuttle across the 4th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. In just a few minutes, cross the Mekong River into Laos.
At around 8:30 AM, reach the Lao immigration checkpoint in Huay Xai. Complete passport and visa procedures before heading to the pier. Bring two passport-sized photos (about 1.5 inches) if you haven’t pre-booked a Lao eVisa,
Between 8:45 AM and 9:00 AM, begin your slow boat journey. From Huay Xai, cruise along the Mekong River to Pakbeng, a small riverside town where you’ll spend the night. The journey takes 6–8 hours, depending on the season and water currents. Enjoy stunning views of unspoiled landscapes, local villages, and riverbank life along the way.
The next morning, head to the pier at 7:15 AM. The boat departs promptly between 7:30 AM and 7:45 AM for the journey to Luang Prabang. This day’s journey also takes 6–8 hours, arriving at the Luang Prabang pier around 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
