Description
Explore the Pak Ou Caves on a guided tour. Discover thousands of Buddha statues, learn about the caves' history, and visit a local village to see traditional crafts.
Begin your journey with a visit to the Pak Ou Caves, a site consisting of two main limestone grottoes filled with thousands of Buddha images. Explore Tham Ting, an open-air, naturally lit grotto packed with over 2,500 to 4,000 carved wooden, bronze, resin, and clay Buddha statues in various meditative and teaching poses.
Then, climb the steep 200 stairs to reach Tham Theung, a darker, deeper cave extending about 50 meters into the cliff. Learn about the history of the caves, originally a site for animist spirit (Phi) worship, which became a Buddhist sanctuary and royal pilgrimage destination starting in the 16th century under King Chao Phonthisarath.
After exploring the caves, stop at a local village to see how paper, weaving, and whisky are made. Enjoy the chance to interact with locals and learn about their traditional crafts.
