Description
Explore iconic landmarks like UNESCO heritage sites Swayambhunath Stupa and Kathmandu Durbar Square, steeped in fascinating myths and rich history along with Pharping Monastery of Nepal.
Your journey begins in Pharping, a sacred pilgrimage town located approximately 23 km south of Kathmandu, overlooking the Bagmati River. Pharping is profoundly associated with Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), the great tantric master who introduced Vajrayana Buddhism to the Himalayan region. Visit the revered Yanglesho Cave, where Guru Rinpoche meditated and attained the realization of mahāmudrā siddhi. Continue to the nearby Asura Cave, situated south of Pharping, where he accomplished the powerful Vajrakilaya practice. These caves remain active meditation sites and are known for their serene and spiritually charged atmosphere.
Another key highlight is the Vajrayogini Temple, a 17th-century shrine founded by the Pamtingpa brothers. Dedicated to the goddess Vajrayogini, the temple reflects the rich tantric traditions of Newar Buddhism and is adorned with colorful prayer flags and ritual symbols. The surrounding area demonstrates Nepal’s unique religious harmony, particularly at the nearby Dakshinkali temples, where Hindu and Buddhist practices coexist. During festival seasons such as Dashain, visitors may witness authentic local rituals and community celebrations. Pharping is also home to several monasteries offering peaceful environments for meditation and contemplation.
The tour then continues to Swayambhunath Stupa, one of the most ancient and revered Buddhist monuments in Nepal. Perched atop a hill west of Kathmandu city, Swayambhunath—known locally as Swayambhu, meaning “self-sprung”—is especially sacred to Buddhist Newars and Tibetan Buddhists. The stupa complex includes the iconic white dome crowned with a golden spire, Buddha’s all-seeing eyes gazing across the valley, prayer wheels, shrines, temples, and a Tibetan monastery. The site is also famous for its resident monkeys, adding a lively character to the spiritual setting. From the hilltop, enjoy panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley while experiencing the calming rhythm of chanting monks and spinning prayer wheels.
