“Tiji” stands for “Tenchi,” meaning the hope of Buddha Dharma prevailing in all worlds. The festival celebrates the victory of good over evil through the legendary story of Dorje Jono, a deity who battles a destructive demon that brought chaos and drought to Mustang. Through sacred rituals, monks symbolically defeat the demon, restoring peace, harmony, and balance to the land.
The highlight of the festival is the series of mesmerizing masked dances performed by monks in the courtyard of the royal palace. Dressed in elaborate costumes and vibrant masks, the performers reenact the mythological tale through slow, rhythmic movements accompanied by traditional music, chants, and ceremonial instruments.
