For those who want to truly lose themselves in the wild heart of Northland, this full-day guided hike through Puketi Forest is the Bay of Islands' most immersive nature experience.

Stretching across 15,000 hectares, Puketi is one of New Zealand's last great subtropical rainforests, home to over 360 indigenous plant species and an extraordinary range of native wildlife. Over 6 hours, your expert guide will take you deep into this ancient ecosystem, far beyond where day-trippers venture.

Marvel at towering kauri trees that have stood for thousands of years, found nowhere else on earth. Learn to identify rimu, tawa, totara, tanekaha, tangled tree ferns, and the graceful nikau palm. Listen for the rich calls of the tui, kokako, fantail, banded rail, fernbird, and kereru ringing through the canopy, and keep your eyes peeled for the Northland green gecko and the remarkable tusked weta.

Your guide's deep passion for conservation brings the forest to life. You'll come away with a real understanding of the threats facing this precious ecosystem, from kauri dieback to introduced predators, and what is being done to protect it.
