From Te Anau: Milford Sound Cruise & Key Summit Hike

Explore Fiordland on a full-day small-group tour from Te Anau. Cruise through Milford Sound, hike to Key Summit on the Routeburn Track, and enjoy a picnic lunch and refreshments.
Begin with an early pickup from your Te Anau accommodation. Travel along the Milford Road with your local guide, passing through the changing landscapes of the Eglinton Valley, ancient beech forest, and the mountains of Fiordland National Park. Stop at the Eglinton Valley viewpoint and Mirror Lakes, with additional short scenic stops along the way as time allows.

At Milford Sound, board a boutique cruise and explore the fiord from the water. Cruise past towering cliffs, rainforest, and waterfalls, with opportunities to look for seals and other wildlife. Milford Sound is impressive in any weather. Rain creates temporary waterfalls down the valley walls, while clear days reveal the scale of the surrounding peaks.

After the cruise, travel back along the Milford Road to The Divide, where your guided Key Summit walk begins. This section of the Routeburn Track climbs steadily through native beech forest before reaching the open alpine landscape above the bushline.

Walk to Key Summit and take in wide views across the surrounding mountains and valleys. On a clear day, you may see towards the Hollyford, Eglinton, and Greenstone valleys. Your guide will help set a suitable group pace and share more about the plants, wildlife, geology, and stories of the area along the way.

The Key Summit walk is approximately 7 kilometers return, with around 400 meters of ascent and descent. Up to three hours are allowed for the walk, including time to enjoy the views. A reasonable level of fitness is required, along with suitable footwear for an uphill walk on an uneven mountain track.

A picnic lunch and refreshments are provided during the day. Please bring sturdy walking shoes or boots, warm layers, and a waterproof jacket, as Fiordland weather can change quickly.

With a maximum of eight guests, this small-group trip gives you time to enjoy the journey, ask questions, and experience both Milford Sound and the Routeburn Track with a knowledgeable local guide.

Return to Te Anau at approximately 5:30 PM after a full day exploring Fiordland from both the water and the mountains. The order of activities and walking route may be adjusted if weather, track, or road conditions require it.
