Description

Explore the Titicaca National Reserve in search of the endemic Titicaca grebe and birds such as the red shoveler, plumbeous rail, puna plover, and burrowing owl, and learn about conservation in the community.
6:00 AM - Pick-up at hotel in Puno (flexible time)
We leave early, which allows us to see birds at rest. Upon arrival in Yanico, we are welcomed by a park ranger who is a member of the community. We begin the walking tour and continue the bird watching by rowboat through the totora reeds on the Wily River, a tributary of Lake Titicaca.
There are 135 registered species in the Reserve, mostly migratory birds, so 30 to 40 species are seen on a tour. The challenge is to spot:
The endemic Titicaca Grebe, birds such as the Red Shoveler, Plumbeous Rail, Silvery Grebe, Puna Plover, Burrowing Owl, Slender-billed Miner, Correndera Pipit, and the elusive Many-colored Rush Tyrant.
The Andean Goose, Puna Teal, Andean Duck, Yellow-billed Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail, Andean Negrito, and Andean Swallow are frequently seen.
It is possible to spot birds all year round, but from May to August there are more migratory birds.
Keep in mind that in the early morning until 7:00 AM, the temperature ranges from 0°C to 5°C, and then during the day it reaches 14°C.
We recommend that you wear warm, lightweight clothing (warm clothing can be left in the rowboat or vehicle)
Remember to wear clothing in friendly colors or camouflage; this is key to not scaring away birds.
You will be provided with binoculars for birdwatching; however, your own binoculars are always better.
Duration: 4-5 hours | Level: Easy | Ideal for: photographers, birdwatchers, nature lovers
