Description
Discover the stories of Curtea de Argeș, photograph the real fortress of Vlad the Impaler, drive the Transfagarasan to Balea Lake, and, if you're lucky, spot wild brown bears.
Start your day with a scenic drive from Bucharest towards the Carpathian Mountains, following part of the famous Transfagarasan Road, considered one of the most spectacular roads in the world.
The first stop is Curtea de Argeș, a historic town home to one of Romania's most beautiful monasteries. Visit the Curtea de Argeș Monastery, renowned for its remarkable architecture, the legend of Master Manole, and as the final resting place of several Romanian kings and queens.
The tour continues to Poienari Fortress, the real fortress of Vlad the Impaler. Stop at the foot of the fortress to admire its dramatic location and discover the fascinating story of Vlad the Impaler and the stronghold that inspired the Dracula legend. The visit is from the outside only and does not include climbing to the fortress.
Next, visit the impressive Vidraru Dam, one of Romania's greatest engineering achievements. From here, continue along the spectacular Transfagarasan Road, passing breathtaking alpine scenery with the chance to spot wild brown bears in their natural habitat from a safe distance.
When the Transfagarasan Road is fully open, usually from mid-June to the end of October, the journey continues to Balea Lake at an altitude of 2,042 meters, where you'll enjoy stunning mountain views and free time for photos or a relaxing break at the mountain lodge.
After a day filled with history, legends, and unforgettable landscapes, relax on the drive back to Bucharest, arriving in the evening.
