Description

From City Hall's civic pride to Good Vibrations' punk revolution — walk Belfast's Victorian soul, the Europa's 36 bombings, Led Zeppelin at Ulster Hall and Bill Clinton's historic visit to Belfast.
Begin at Belfast City Hall — funded entirely from local Belfast money, a deliberate statement of civic pride and independence. Hear the stories of protests, rallies and pivotal moments in Irish history that played out on its steps, from suffragette demonstrations to peace rallies.
Move through Victorian Belfast past the Presbyterian Assembly Rooms, where faith, politics and social reform collided, and on to Great Victoria Street where the city's golden age of ambition is written in stone. Stand outside the legendary Crown Bar — one of the finest Victorian gin palaces in the world — a National Trust masterpiece that has survived wars, bombs and centuries of Belfast life.
Nearby the Europa Hotel tells one of the most extraordinary stories in European history. Bombed 36 times during the Troubles and rebuilt every single time, the Europa became a global symbol of Belfast's refusal to give in. War correspondents from around the world filed reports from its rooms. It was also where your guide once shook hands with Bill Clinton — a moment that signalled peace was finally possible.
Compare the old Victorian Great Victoria Street station with the new Grand Central Station — two eras of Belfast ambition standing almost side by side. At the Grand Opera House, bombed twice and gloriously restored, hear how this building refused to die. At Ulster Hall, Charles Dickens once read to spellbound crowds, Ian Paisley thundered from the stage, and Led Zeppelin played one of their greatest early gigs.
Discover Good Vibrations — the record shop where the one-eyed maverick Terri Hooley brought punk rock to Belfast at the height of the Troubles, signing The Undertones and giving a city in crisis something to believe in. Pass BBC Northern Ireland, whose journalists reported the Troubles to a watching world. Hear the story of the Northern Bank robbery — one of the most audacious heists in European history.
The tour finishes through the bohemian Botanic Avenue into the elegant Queen's Quarter — Queen's University, the Botanic Gardens and the Ulster Museum. This is Belfast's other story — its Victorian soul, its cultural life, its music and its remarkable characters. Come and hear it from someone who lived it.
