Description
Discover the Highlands on a day trip from Inverness. See the Glenfinnan Viaduct, explore Mallaig, and take an optional ride the West Highland Line, crossing the iconic Harry Potter Bridge.
Begin your adventure in Inverness and follow the famous shores of Loch Ness, stopping for a wander at Fort Augustus. From here, head south through classic Highland scenery to the Commando Memorial, with sweeping views across the Nevis Range and towards Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain.
Next, make your way to the Glenfinnan Viaduct, a place known by many fans (or shall we say, muggles) as the “Harry Potter Bridge.” Framed by lochs and mountains, this is home to the striking Glenfinnan Monument, built in tribute to the Jacobite clans.
Continue west to the colorful fishing port of Mallaig. Enjoy free time to wander the harbor, enjoy lunch, or sample some fresh local seafood before hopping on a train to Fort William (optional). It’s time to swap wheels for rails.
The West Highland Line delivers one of the most scenic train journeys in Scotland. Rumble across the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct – aye, the one used by the Hogwarts Express – and glide past lochs, moorland, and tiny villages tucked into the landscape.
Get off the train in Fort William and rejoin your driver guide to continue the adventure by coach. As you head back in the direction of Inverness, the scenery keeps on delivering. Stop at the old stone bridge at Invermoriston, a small and pretty village divided by the River Moriston, before finishing the day above the eerie ruins of Urquhart Castle. Return to Inverness in the evening.
