Your guide will take you to the starting point near Kithalella Railway Station, where you’ll be equipped with a headlamp, a bottle of water, and optionally, a hiking stick for your comfort.
The trek starts along the railway tracks — a unique and thrilling experience in itself. As you walk in the quiet early morning through the jungle and misty darkness, the guide will share stories and information about the area, wildlife, and Ella's natural ecosystem. Spot a variety of animals and birds along the way, including monkeys, butterflies, peacocks, and even the touch-sensitive Mimosa plant that reacts to human contact — a fun and surprising moment during the walk.
Pass cabbages, guava trees, cinnamon plants, and tea plantations, learning about their importance to local agriculture and daily life. After about 2 hours of moderate hiking, reach Viewpoint 1. Sit on provided carpets and wait for the sun to rise over the Ella Valley — a truly breathtaking sight. Your guide will help you take memorable photos and explain the history and legends of Ella Rock.
From there, continue to Viewpoint 2, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Ravana Falls, Little Adam's Peak, and even distant areas like Udawalawe, Yala, Passara, and Nuwara Eliya. The 360-degree view is simply stunning.
On the descent, your guide will continue pointing out native trees, flowering plants, village vegetable gardens with tomatoes, brinjals (eggplants), pumpkins, pepper vines, kithul trees, and more.
