Description

Jewish heritage in the heart of Prague. See the Maisel Synagogue, the Pinkas Synagogue, the Jewish Town Hall and visit the Old Jewish Cemetery, the Old-New Synagogue and the unique Spanish Synagogue.
Lying between the busy Old Time Square and the scenic Vltava River, Prague Josefov is one of the best preserved Jewish Ghettos in Europe. On this tour, you will explore the most important Jewish heritage sites to discover the turbulent past of the local Jewish community. Get to know the Jewish Quarter and enjoy a relaxing boat cruise along the UNESCO-listed historic center of Prague.

The 3-hour option includes a 2-hour walking tour and a 1-hour cruise. The meeting point is in front of the World of Franz Kafka, which is dedicated to the famous writer of Jewish origin. You will walk through the historic Old Town Square and see important landmarks such as the 600-years-old Astronomical Clock and a former residence of the Jewish Kafka family in the House of Last Minute. You will also see a playful Franz Kafka Monument in front of the stunning Spanish Synagogue.

Walking through the old Jewish Town, you will discover many places where the local Jewish community has lived, prayed and worked since the Middle Ages. Among them is the 13th century Gothic Old-New Synagogue, known as the legendary home of the Golem of Prague, and the beautiful Jewish Town Hall, which was built in 1586 to host meetings and events of the Jewish community. Another important point of interest will be the historic Maisel Synagogue, where Hitler horrifically wanted to create the ‘museum of the extinct race’.

Further along you will pass next the Old Jewish Cemetery and the Pinkas Synagogue, which houses the Memorial of Holocaust Victims of Bohemia and Moravia with 77,297 names of the concentration camp victims listed on the walls. At the riverbank of the Vltava River you will also see magnificent Rudolfinum, which is a site of the events from a famous Czech novella entitled ‘Mendelssohn is on the Roof’.

The main attraction of this Jewish tour will be a boat cruise, which will take you on an exciting voyage along the Vltava River with amazing views of the ‘city of a hundred spires’. You will see the Jewish Quarter from a new perspective and learn more about Prague’s history from a special audio guide. Among some of the amazing highlights you will see from a boat will be the iconic Charles Bridge, the National Theatre, and the Prague Castle with St Vitus Cathedral standing proudly on top of the hill.

Choose the 4-hour option to go on a 3-hour walking tour and a 1-hour cruise. This tour is extended with a visit inside the Spanish Synagogue, which is one of the most beautiful and important Jewish places of worship in Josefov. Admire a unique Moorish-style building with arabesques, gilt and polychrome motifs on the facade, and step inside to marvel at the 19th century interior with a showpiece Torah ark. The synagogue is part of the Jewish Museum complex and hosts a permanent exhibition of Jewish history from the 18th century Enlightenment period to the present day.
