Description
Tour Montevideo's Central Cemetery with a local guide and discover, among marble sculptures and mausoleums, stories of love, loss, and oblivion that are still etched in stone.
Pass through the grand entrance of the Central Cemetery, Montevideo's oldest and most iconic cemetery, and step into a true open-air museum. Since the 19th century, families in the city have commissioned sculptors and marble workers to create pieces to commemorate their loved ones: angels, mourning figures, portraits, and symbols that today tell stories that many have already forgotten.
At the start, you'll receive a playlist with music by a Uruguayan artist that will accompany you throughout the tour. That's why it's important to bring your cell phone with a charged battery and headphones. Your tour guide will welcome you and tell you what you'll experience on the tour.
The first stop is "Angel and Woman," a work by the sculptor José Belloni, where you'll learn about the history and meaning of this piece. Then you'll visit the National Pantheon, where key figures in the country's history are laid to rest, and you'll stop in front of José Livi's "La Pietà."
At the following stops, the tour has some surprises in store: love stories that defied death, which we won't spoil here. Along the way, you'll learn to read funerary art: what inverted torches, truncated columns, wreaths, or clasped hands mean.
A peaceful and respectful experience, ideal for lovers of history, art, and great stories. At the end, you'll have a new perspective on Montevideo and on the way a city chooses to remember... and forget.
