Gongtan Ancient Town–Wujiang Gallery is basically a combo of a thousand‑year‑old riverside town and a scenic canyon boat trip.

It’s tucked away in Gongtan Ancient Town in Youyang Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, Chongqing, right at the start of the famous “Thousand‑Li Wujiang, Hundred‑Li Gallery,” and this stretch is considered the core of the whole river gallery. With around 1,700–1,800 years of history, it’s listed as a National Historic and Cultural Town and a national 4A‑level scenic area, often called “Chongqing’s No. 1 Ancient Town.”Sailing time is approximately 1 hour. Highlights and things to do:
The “river gallery” boat ride is a must. This part of the Wujiang runs through a relatively deep gorge, with steep mountains on both sides and clear green water. Cruising through it, you really understand why people call it “Thousand‑Li Wujiang, Hundred‑Li Gallery,” and on cloudy or rainy days, when mist drifts over the river, it looks even more like a traditional ink painting.
The stilted‑house clusters are another big highlight. More than 200 wooden houses in Ming‑ and Qing‑style cling to the cliffs along the river, stacked one above another, and at night, when the lights come on and reflect in the water, it’s an amazing spot for photos.
Gongtan also has a strong artistic vibe. It’s known as a “sketching town” and an “intangible‑heritage town,” which makes it great for photography, painting, and slow‑paced stays. A lot of painters and photographers end up living here for longer creative retreats.
