The tour is designed to encompass first the visit to the yearly Thracian Mysteries Festival held at the Ancient Theater of Philippopolis (in modern day Plovdiv) and alongside it gives you the opportunity to see authentic Thracian tombs and temples in 2 more locations in the itinerary, before and after the festival. In this way, the traveler would get a deeper glimpse inside the heritage of the unique Thracian Civilization that stands in the root of the splendid archaeological remains and cultural background from Iron Age and Classical Antiquity in our land and the neighboring countries.
Single-dates tour: 26 September - 27 September 2026

Day 1, 26th September, Saturday
We depart from Sofia at 9 a.m. After a scenic drive through the Sredna Gora Mountains and the Rose Valley, we arrive in Kazanlak around noon. The first site we visit is the Kazanlak Tomb, famous for its magnificent murals. The tomb is a masterpiece of the ancient Thracian culture and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Then we have about an hour for lunch, after which we take a tour of some of the most remarkable ancient tombs and temples in the Valley of the Thracian Kings. There are hundreds of Thracian burial mounds and cult sites in the area, some of which have been excavated and studied by archaeologists. Around 4 p.m., we depart for Plovdiv, where we arrive around 6 p.m. for the annual Thracian Mysteries Festival. At this unique event, you will immerse yourself in the mystical world of Ancient Thrace with the wonderful performances, original dramaturgy, music, and choreography, inspired by the sacred Thracian epic.

Day 2, 27th September, Sunday
We meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Central Square in Plovdiv, from where we take a walking tour of the Old Town. Plovdiv is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe, with 8000 years of history. The city has also preserved a rich heritage of beautiful traditional houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period, which we will see during our walk. We visit the Roman Forum, the Roman Stadium, The Assumption of the Holy Mother Cathedral, the Ancient Theater, the Church of Sts. Constantine and Helena, the Kuyumdzhieva House with the Regional Ethnographic Museum, the ruins of the ancient fortress on Nebet Tepe, and (optional) the Episcopal Basilica of Philippopolis. Around noon, we finish the tour and have time for lunch and a short break. About 2:00 p.m., we depart from the center of Plovdiv and, after about 1.5 hours, arrive in Starosel, where we explore the largest Thracian cult complex discovered to date in Bulgaria. The visit includes the big domed tomb-temple at Chetinyova Mound and the temple at Horizon Mound. Afterwards, we head to Sofia and arrive back around 7:00 p.m.
