Papallacta Hot Springs, Glacial Lagoon & Cloud Forest Hike

Visit a cold glacial lagoon in the high Andes, walk the one-hour "La Isla" trail, and rest in the natural volcanic hot springs of Papallacta.
Leave Quito behind and drive over the high eastern Andes mountains to the hot springs of Papallacta. This private day trip is designed for travelers who want a simple mix of outdoor walking and time to relax in thermal waters, traveling at their own pace with a private vehicle and guide.

The drive starts by climbing through the high-altitude paramo ecosystem. You will make a brief stop at a viewpoint overlooking the glacial Papallacta Lagoon to see the high-mountain landscape and learn where the area's water comes from before heading down into the valley.

Before entering the pools, you will take a one-hour walk along the "La Isla" ecological trail. This flat, easy path runs right next to the Papallacta River, cutting through a high-altitude cloud forest. The woods here are filled with unique paper trees (Polylepis) and wild bromeliads. Your guide will help you look for mountain birds, including the sword-billed hummingbird, which is native to this specific habitat. It is a great way to stretch your legs and breathe the crisp mountain air before heading to the baths.

After the walk, you will enter the thermal pools of Papallacta. These hot springs are heated directly by the underground volcanic activity of the region and contain natural minerals that are great for the body. You will have plenty of free time to sit in the water, feel the contrast of the cool mountain air, and have lunch at the local restaurant (not included), which specializes in fresh mountain trout. Once you are finished, your driver will take you on a smooth ride straight back to your hotel in Quito.
