We are going to visit the beautiful Kakheti region, located in the eastern part of Georgia. Traces of human life in Kakheti date back to the Stone Age. Georgian folklore is especially famous for Kakhetian polyphonic singing, including the legendary song “Chakrulo,” which was included in the collection of 11 traditional folk music recordings sent into space by NASA aboard the Voyager spacecraft in 1977.

Kakheti is also considered the heart of Georgian winemaking. More than 70% of Georgia’s wine is produced here, and around 80 different grape varieties have been recorded in the region.

At the beginning of our tour, we will visit a local wine factory, where you will discover the 8,000-year-old history of Georgian winemaking. You will also taste four different kinds of wine and two traditional spirits: Georgian Chacha and Brandy.

Afterward, we will stop at a local fruit market to taste traditional dried fruits and authentic Georgian snacks such as Churchkhela and Tklapi. If you would like to participate in a Churchkhela-making masterclass, it can be arranged upon request — just let us know at the beginning of the tour.

Before reaching our next destination, we will visit one of the region’s hidden gems — a secret location rarely visited by tourists. There, you will enjoy a short guided talk about the Soviet Union history and Georgia during the 1990s, when the country got out of USSR, along with a photo stop.

Our next stop will be in the Bodbe Monastery, an active Georgian Orthodox convent closely connected to Saint Nino, the enlightener of Georgia, who converted the country to Christianity in the 4th century.

The final destination of our tour will be Sighnaghi, also known as the “City of Love.” Here, you can walk through beautifully restored 18th-century streets and enjoy breathtaking views over the Alazani Valley and the distant Caucasus Mountains. On cloudy or foggy days, the mountains may not always be visible.

The city is surrounded by a defensive wall over 4 kilometers long, featuring 23 towers and 6 gates. Often compared to a miniature version of the Great Wall of China, the wall surrounds Sighnaghi and offers visitors the opportunity to stroll along parts of it.

While visiting Sighnaghi you can taste delicious wine ice cream and taste rear authentic ice wine.

Kakhetian cuisine is rich and delicious, especially famous for its meat dishes. Traditional specialties include barbecue cooked on a tsalam (grape wood), khashlama, chakapuli, and chikhirtma. Authentic vegetarian options are also widely available in local restaurants, including pkhali, lobio, and badrijani nigvzit.
