Descrizione
With around 1,400 architectural monuments from the Middle Ages, Lüneburg is truly a treasure trove. Today, the city is also known for its student life, the TV series Rote Rosen, and as a Christmas city.
Our tour starts at the train station and leads from there to the old town. There, you'll reach the Ilmenau with the famous Stintmarkt pub row, the old department store, and the old crane. Continue past the Lüner Mühle and through the water district with the Brausebrücke and Abtswasserkunst.
One of the highlights of our tour is the market square with the Luna fountain and the town hall, one of the most beautiful medieval town halls in Northern Germany. We'll also take a look at the town hall garden, a green oasis in the middle of the city. Near the town hall, you'll find other interesting buildings like the town library, the Heinrich Heine House, and the former town palace.
Before we leave the city center, we'll make a detour to St. Nikolaikirche, a typical North German brick basilica. Then we'll head to greener areas. First, we'll take a detour to Kreideberg Lake in the north of the city center and then walk through the Liebesgrund, part of the old city wall, and then come to the former monastery district north of St. Michaelis Church, now the seat of the district.
Another highlight is climbing the Kalkberg. Climb up the steps to the summit plateau at a height of 56 m. From up there, we'll enjoy a wide view over the city with its many church towers.
First, we'll head back to St. Michaelis Church and then on through the subsidence area, which is related to the former salt extraction. Finally, we'll reach the old town again. We'll follow Grapengießerstraße there. It's a pedestrian zone with shops, restaurants, and cafés in many pretty houses.
Finally, we'll reach the Platz am Sande, which is framed by numerous tall brick gabled houses from different eras. At its eastern end, the famous St. Johanniskirche with its leaning tower.
The path now leads past the water tower with old technology and past the ensemble of the Ratsmühle with the Ratswasserkunst. Once again, we'll visit a green oasis, namely the Wandrahmpark, an arboretum, and then pass by the Lüneburg Museum. From there, you'll head back to the train station.
