As soon as you step into the beautiful studio space, you'll be greeted by the distinctive aromas and majestic array of bronze instruments. The activity begins with a relaxing session while sipping warm, authentic Jogja tea. Here, an experienced local instructor will introduce you to a brief history of Yogyakarta gamelan and the noble philosophy behind each instrument—how music is not just about notes, but also about harmony, feeling, and togetherness.

Next, you'll be taken on a tour of the various instruments. You'll learn to distinguish the functions of each instrument, from the Saron and Demung, which play the melody, the Kenong and Gong, which maintain the rhythm, to the Kendang, which acts as the tempo leader. Feel free to try striking some of the instruments to experience the magical vibrations of the bronze metal.

Before you begin playing together, you'll be guided through a very simple traditional number notation system (the Kepatihan System). Don't worry, this system is very easy to understand, even for beginners. In a matter of minutes, you'll be able to read basic beat patterns and be ready to put them into practice.

Under the patient guidance of our instructor, we'll begin by pampering your ears by playing a short, traditional Yogyakarta song.
