Magome & Tsumago Nakasendo Trail Tour & Lunch

Begin with a convenient pickup from your hotel in Nagoya or Matsumoto. Before reaching the trail, listen as your guide explains why the Nakasendo existed, who was allowed to travel and who wasn’t, and how post towns enforced order, permits, and curfews.

Next, explore Magome-juku, walking its steep main street lined with restored inns and homes. Learn about honjin and waki-honjin (elite lodging), porter systems and baggage transport, and fire prevention and town regulations.

Then, walk a well-preserved forest section of the original highway (approx. 7–8 km). Along the way, see original stone paths, bell houses once used for communication, and tea houses that served travelers.

Arrive in Tsumago-juku, preserved under strict conservation rules. See traditional inns still operating, old residences and storage houses, and streets intentionally kept free of modern clutter.

Next, enjoy a lunch break at a local countryside restaurant or traditional inn. Savor a typical meal with local vegetables, rice, soup, pickles, and tea or water.

After lunch, enjoy some free time to explore independently or visit a local history house, small museum, or rest station. Finally, relax on the comfortable drive back to your hotel, arriving by early evening.
