Visit the Nathaniel Russell House and explore one of Charleston’s most important historic homes. Built in 1808, this National Historic Landmark is celebrated for its refined Federal-style design, geometrically shaped rooms, elaborate plasterwork, and formal gardens. At the heart of the house is its best-known feature, a graceful three-story free-flying staircase, widely regarded as an architectural masterpiece.

Learn about the life of Nathaniel Russell, a successful merchant who moved to Charleston from Rhode Island and established his household at 51 Meeting Street with his wife, Sarah Hopton Russell, their daughters, and as many as eighteen enslaved people who lived and worked on the property. As you move through the house, gain a deeper understanding not only of the wealth and taste that shaped the residence, but also of the labor and lives of the enslaved men, women, and children connected to it.

The house has been restored as closely as possible to its 1808 appearance through forensic analysis and conservation work, giving visitors a detailed view of early 19th-century Charleston domestic life. Ongoing preservation efforts also extend to the kitchen house, where continued research helps illuminate the material history of the site and the people who lived and worked there. Guests can join a guided tour offered on the hour, with the last tour at 4:00 PM. For those choosing the combo option, admission also includes the Aiken-Rhett House Museum. Your visit finishes at the house after time to explore its interiors and grounds.
