2-Day Ausangate Trek To Rainbow Mountain And Red Valley

2-day trek from Cusco to Rainbow Mountain via Pucacocha Pass, the most stunning Ausangate viewpoint, with glaciers, colorful peaks, and turquoise lagoons in a remote Andean landscape.
DAY 1: Cusco - Pitumarca - Quesiuno - Pucacocha Pass - Anantapata - Surine Qocha Camp

Your adventure begins early in the morning with a hotel pickup at 4:30 am. We’ll drive for about 3 hours to the trailhead, where our chef will prepare a nutritious breakfast while you get ready. Before starting, your guide will provide a briefing with important details and safety tips for the journey ahead.

We begin hiking through a beautiful green valley with stunning views of the majestic Ausangate Mountain in the distance. Along the way, you’ll encounter traditional Andean communities and observe hundreds of alpacas and llamas grazing peacefully, offering a unique cultural and natural experience.

The trail gradually ascends to the first mountain pass, Pukaqocha (4,870 m / 15,977 ft). From here, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the turquoise Pukaqocha Lagoon and the towering Ausangate Glacier, whose melting ice feeds the lagoon below.

After a short rest, we continue for about 2 hours to Anantapata, where we’ll stop for lunch. In the afternoon, we hike uphill for approximately 3 hours to reach the highest point of the day, Warmisaya Pass (4,985 m / 16,354 ft). From this viewpoint, you’ll catch your first glimpse of the colorful Rainbow Mountain in the distance.

We then descend for 45 minutes to our campsite near Surine Qocha Lagoon. Upon arrival, enjoy a warm happy hour followed by a delicious dinner and a well-earned rest.

DAY 2: Surine Qocha - Rainbow Mountain - Red Valley - Llactoc - Cusco Hotel

We’ll wake you early with a hot coca tea served in your tent, followed by a hearty breakfast. Then we begin a 45-minute ascent to the viewpoint of Rainbow Mountain.

Here, you’ll have time to explore and take in the incredible landscapes. Enjoy panoramic views of Rainbow Mountain, the sacred Ausangate, and surrounding snow-capped peaks. Visiting early allows you to experience this magical place before the crowds arrive.

Afterward, we hike towards the stunning Red Valley, a surreal landscape rarely visited by tourists. Its deep red mountains and peaceful atmosphere create a unique and unforgettable experience. A short 30-minute walk brings us to the best viewpoint of the valley.

We then descend for about 1.5 hours through remote Andean communities, where you may spot llamas and even wild vicuñas. After a final lunch, our private transport will take you back to Cusco, dropping you off at your hotel.
