Itinerary: 8am departure, 5:30pm return
1) Kings Park Botanical Gardens
Your first stop is Kings Park, the September wildflower festival here is not just a display, it’s a seasonal highlight of Perth showcasing thousands of wildflowers with over 3,000 WA plant species on display.
2) Djidi Djidi Ridge
In spring, the ridge comes alive with colourful native blooms including orchids, everlastings, ground covers and kangaroo paws. Supplied with a wildflower map, see how many you can find by taking a gentle 1.5km short walk through the native bushland to a panoramic lookout.
If you would prefer to simply relax and enjoy your surroundings, take a seat at the picnic tables under the Redgums as we bring out the thermos, tea, coffee and chocolate biscuits.
3) Shire of Victoria Plains
From here the drive takes us past the Wheatbelt’s vibrant canola fields, rolling landscapes turn brilliant shades of gold when in season. Canola is in flower for just four weeks each year, making them all the more special to experience in person.
4) Historic Monastery
Next is a lunch stop like no other, a home style, wholesome three course meal with a glass of wine in the dining quarters of the historic New Norcia monastery.
Lunch at New Norcia is less about luxury dining and more about the authenticity that is aligned with the monastery’s philosophy of hospitality and simplicity. It reflects the traditions of the Benedictine monastic lifestyle - simple, seasonal and thoughtfully prepared.
5) New Norcia
Explore the historic township of New Norcia, where seasonal blooms meet centuries old architecture. Admire the pink and white everlastings outside the 117 year old St Gertrude’s College, with its striking Gothic Revival architecture. Stroll among fields of petite yellow daisies that appear throughout the olive groves and around the Old Flour Mill.
6) Sir Charles Gardner botanical art collection
Head to of one of the town’s oldest and most significant heritage buildings, The St Joseph’s orphanage. In this 165 year old building is where you'll will find the Sir Charles Gardner botanical collection, A dedicated room showcasing botanical art by Charles Austin Gardner, a pioneer WA botanist who bequeathed this collection to the Benedictine community at New Norcia.
7) Native Flower Farm and Winery
Siverina Estate is a family owned winery and flower farm producing small batch warm climate wines. In addition to grapes, Siverina grows native wildflowers used by local florists which show case on many of their wine labels.
Sample a selection of wines including Cara's favourite "The Chittering Chardonnay" which features the yellow Kangaroo paw on its label. Other popular choices include the Cab Sav with the striking scarlet banksia or the Silver Princess Eucalyptus Rosè.
