Hukou Waterfall is located in Hukou Town, Yichuan County, Yan'an City, Shaanxi Province, in the middle section of the Jin-Shaan Grand Canyon along the middle reaches of the Yellow River. It borders Yichuan of Shaanxi to the west and Ji County of Shanxi to the east, making it a scenic area shared by both provinces. As the world's largest yellow waterfall and China's second-largest waterfall, Hukou Waterfall is renowned for its magnificent momentum — "a thousand miles of the Yellow River captured in a single pot" — and is hailed as "the heart of the Yellow River and the soul of the Chinese nation." In 1988, it was designated by the State Council as a national scenic area (second batch); in 2002, it was rated a National Geopark; and in July 2022, it was officially confirmed as a National 5A-level Tourist Attraction.
The Yellow River originates from the Bayan Har Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and flows eastward in a winding course. Near Togtoh County in Inner Mongolia, it turns south and becomes the boundary river between Shaanxi and Shanxi. In the Hukou area, the riverbed suddenly narrows from about 300 meters wide to 20–30 meters. The water plunges from a cliff more than 20 meters high into a stone channel about 30 meters wide, forming a massive horseshoe-shaped waterfall group. The main waterfall is about 40 meters wide with a drop of over 30 meters.

The formation of Hukou Waterfall is the result of geological evolution. The riverbed consists of sandstone and mudstone formed approximately 240 million years ago (Triassic period). Due to long-term water erosion, the waterfall retreats upstream at a rate of 1–2 meters per year. Over the past 3,000 years, it has eroded backward about 4,000 meters, creating the "Ten-Mile Dragon Channel" — 30–50 meters wide, 40 meters deep, and 4,200 meters long.

The name "Hukou" (Pot Mouth) first appeared in The Tribute of Yu in the Book of Documents: "Having regulated the Pot Mouth, he governed Liang and Qi." Legend associates it with Yu the Great's flood control efforts. Its shape — "a river swirling like a pot" — gave rise to the name Hukou.
