Mekele: 3-Day Danakil Depression Tour with Camping

Explore the Danakil Depression on a 3-day tour from Mekele. Visit the Erta Ale Volcano, swim in Lake Asale, and explore the colorful hydrothermal fields of Dallol.
Day 1: Mekele/Semera → Erta Ale Volcano

Get picked up from Mekele Airport or Semera and drive for 5–6 hours into the Danakil Depression. Stop for lunch at Afdera (Lake Afdera) and take an optional swim in the salt lake.

Continue to Erta Ale Base Camp and take a short trek (20–40 min) to the volcano rim at dusk. Witness the active lava lake glowing at sunset and camp on the crater rim.

Day 2: Erta Ale → Lake Asale → Dallol

Enjoy a sunrise view over the lava lake and take an optional second visit to the North Crater. Descend from Erta Ale and drive to Hamad Ela and onward to Lake Asale salt flats.

Watch camel caravans transporting salt and observe traditional salt excavation. Swim or float in the hyper-saline Lake Asale and watch a spectacular desert sunset. Camp at Hamad Ela or near Lake Asale.

Day 3: Dallol → Mekele/Semera

Drive to Dallol, one of Earth’s lowest points at 125 m below sea level. Explore colorful hydrothermal fields, sulfuric acid pools, bubbling mud pots, salt mountains, and yellow-green volcanic landscapes.

Take an optional visit to Ragad (Asebo) for more salt mining activity. Return to Mekele or Semera for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
