A major wine tourism destination today, the vast estate of Château de Lastours was already a stopover point in the heart of the Corbières at the dawn of the first millennium. Garrisons were stationed there, and a fortress guarded the country lanes leading to the Via Domitia. A castrum was then built to welcome travelers. Its name, Castrum de Turribus, over time became Château de Lastours, referring to the watchtowers that overlooked the Via Domitia at this particularly dangerous location. From the 13th century to the Revolution, these lands of mixed farming (wood, livestock, cereals, vines), held in fief by the Viscounts of Narbonne, would be owned by three major families.
