Discover the Lion Forest, one of the four great gardens of Suzhou and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the second year of the Zhizheng reign of the Yuan Dynasty, this time-honored garden is renowned as the "Kingdom of Rockeries" and embodies the spirit of stones, the serenity of Zen, and the elegance of classical gardens.
Originating from a Buddhist temple, Lion Forest was initially constructed in memory of eminent monks. It gains its name from the Taihu stones scattered across the garden, which resemble crouching and towering lions, together with the Zen allusion of the "Lion’s Roar" in Buddhist scriptures.
Step into the garden and explore the layered labyrinthine rockeries, the most breathtaking sight. Over a thousand Taihu stones feature the classic charms of slenderness, hollowness, transparency, and wrinkled texture. Stacked in layers and interwoven in twists and turns, they form a three-dimensional secret realm with nine winding paths and twenty-one interconnected caves.
Climb up the stones to overlook the pavilions, terraces, and waterscapes of the whole garden, or thread through caves to discover brand-new scenery around every corner. Each step unveils a new view, perfectly interpreting the poetic conception of "Beyond the twisting mountains and wandering rivers lies a sudden glimpse of blooming villages". Various stone lions hidden among the rocks, squatting, lying, leaping, or roaring, await visitors to discover their endless delights.
Beyond the marvelous stones, every pavilion and terrace exudes timeless elegance. The True Delight Pavilion, inscribed by Emperor Qianlong, shines brightly, testifying to his deep fondness for the garden with five visits during his six southern tours, endowing the garden with imperial grandeur. The Lixue Hall breathes the fragrance of books, the Nine-Turn Bridge winds gracefully over the water, the Plum Inquiry Pavilion stands quietly against the breeze, and the Napping Pavilion is caressed by gentle winds.
A pool of clear water encircles the rockeries, mirroring the sky, clouds, pavilions, and stones. Well-arranged flowers and trees dot the garden, and soft breezes drift through the corridors, sweeping away mortal hustle and bustle and leaving nothing but peace and tranquility.
