Most Komodo trips bring you back to the same harbour you left from. This one does not. You board a wooden phinisi in Labuan Bajo and keep heading west, through Komodo National Park and across Sumbawa, until you step onto the white sand of Gili Trawangan.

THE SAILING
You wake before dawn for the climb up Padar, where three bays curve away below you in three colours of sand. Then Pink Beach, dry forest with a ranger to find the dragons, and Manta Point. What follows depends on your class. Saleh Bay, on Luxury options only, is one of the few places on earth where you can reliably swim beside whale sharks at dawn.

THE GILI ISLANDS
From Kayangan you are driven across Lombok, then take a speedboat to Gili Trawangan and walk to your hotel. Your night there is included. No cars, no motorbikes, just horse carts and beach bars. Next morning, a glass-bottom snorkeling trip from late morning to mid-afternoon: Blue Coral, the statues off Gili Meno, the baby turtle sanctuary, Meno Lake, the turtle point and the coral gardens off Gili Air, with a shared GoPro on board. Then your transfer to Senggigi, Mataram or the airport.

ALREADY PAID FOR
Komodo National Park entrance and ranger fees, the Whale Shark Point fee on Luxury options, your hotel night on Gili Trawangan, every transfer, and the snorkeling trip with gear and photos. Only your food on Gili is extra.

CHOOSING YOUR BOAT
Standard: a bunk on the open deck, or a private cabin with air conditioning. Deluxe: smaller group, sharing or private cabin. Luxury: an extra night at sea, whale sharks, ensuite cabins. Luxury Plus: the largest vessel, jacuzzi, Starlink wifi, drone photography.
