Alternatively, explore nearby viewpoints, such as Ninho da Manta and the Stairway to Heaven, also known as Miradouro da Pedra Rija. This optional walk offers a beautiful alternative perspective of Madeira’s dramatic mountain landscape before sunset.
The visit to the Stairway to Heaven is entirely optional and must be undertaken independently. It is subject to official access rules, weather conditions, visibility, safety considerations, trail conditions, and availability on the day. Please note that this is not a guided hike and does not include the full PR1 trail between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo.
Guests who wish to visit the Stairway to Heaven should begin the walk immediately upon arrival and manage their time carefully. From the Pico do Arieiro parking area, the walk takes approximately 30–35 minutes each way. For those choosing this optional self-guided walk, the recommended return point is the Stairway to Heaven / Miradouro da Pedra Rija viewpoint. Tickets included, if necessary for the day. Guests should not continue further along the trail, as doing so may make it difficult or impossible to return to the vehicle on time and the trail is a strictly one-way hike after this point.
The return transfer departs approximately 15 minutes after sunset.
