The Northern Circuit Route is the longest and newest route on Mount Kilimanjaro, known for its excellent acclimatization profile and stunning scenery.
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp
Elevation: 2,360 m (7,740 ft) to 2,750 m (9,020 ft)
Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After registration at Londorossi Gate, you will drive to the Lemosho Glades trailhead. The trek starts through dense rainforest, offering opportunities to spot Colobus monkeys and other wildlife.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
Elevation: 2,750 m (9,020 ft) to 3,500 m (11,480 ft)
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail steepens as you enter the heath and moorland zone.
Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
Elevation: 3,500 m (11,480 ft) to 3,850 m (12,630 ft)

Today's trek provides further acclimatization as you traverse the vast Shira Plateau.

Day 4: Shira 2 to Moir Hut

Leaving Shira 2 Camp, you'll head east toward the Lava Tower. The trail gradually gains altitude, passing through the rocky terrain of the alpine desert.

Day 5: Moir Hut to Pofu Camp
Elevation: 4,200 m (13,780 ft) to 4,050 m (13,290 ft)
Distance: 7 km (4.3 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Today's trek takes you off the beaten path as you continue eastward.

Day 6: Pofu Camp to Third Cave Camp
Elevation: 4,050 m (13,290 ft) to 3,870 m (12,700 ft)

Habitat: Moorland
Descending from the alpine desert, you'll rejoin the main trail and continue southward. The landscape transitions back to moorland, with giant senecios and lobelias dotting the hillsides.

Day 7: Third Cave Camp to School Hut
Elevation: 3,870 m (12,700 ft) to 4,800 m (15,750 ft)
Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today's hike takes you to the base of Kibo Peak, the summit of Kilimanjaro. You'll ascend gradually through the lunar-like landscape of the alpine desert to School Hut, your final campsite before the summit attempt.

Day 8: School Hut to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,800 m (15,750 ft) to 5,895 m (19,341 ft) and down to 3,100 m (10,170 ft)
Distance: 21 km (13.1 miles) ascent, 12 km (7.5 miles) descent
Hiking Time: 12-15 hours ascent, 5-6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest
The summit attempt begins around midnight. You'll trek through the night, ascending steep scree slopes to Stella Point on the crater rim.

Day 9: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 3,100 m (10,170 ft) to 1,630 m (5,380 ft)
Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
On your final day, you'll descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. After signing out at the gate, you'll receive your summit certificates and be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
