From Quito: Cayambe National Park, Glacier & Green Lagoon

Travel from Quito to Cayambe National Park and discover one of Ecuador’s most impressive high-altitude landscapes. After passing through the town of Cayambe, continue by vehicle toward the mountain refuge, surrounded by Andean páramo and spectacular views of Cayambe Volcano.

Once at the refuge, the experience can be adapted to the group’s fitness level and comfort with the altitude.

The recommended route is a hike toward Green Lagoon and the base of the glacier. This option takes approximately one hour uphill and reaches around 4,600 meters above sea level. Although the trail is not technically difficult, the altitude makes the hike moderately demanding. Along the way, enjoy incredible views of the volcano, the surrounding mountains, the lagoon, and the glacier.

For travelers who prefer a shorter walk, or who do not feel comfortable continuing at altitude, there is also the option to descend approximately 30 minutes from the refuge toward a beautiful glacier viewpoint. Those who prefer an easier experience can stay near the refuge and explore the surrounding trails and viewpoints while enjoying impressive views of Cayambe.

Your guide will help choose the most suitable route depending on each participant’s fitness level and response to altitude. No technical climbing experience is required.

If Green Lagoon cannot be visited due to weather conditions or operational conditions affecting the activity, travelers will be offered a full refund. If an individual traveler chooses a shorter route because of fitness level or personal response to altitude, the guide will provide an alternative experience near the glacier or refuge.

After enjoying the mountain landscape and taking time for photos, return to the vehicle and begin the journey back to Quito.
