The Karl May House in Hohenstein-Ernstthal is the museum located in the birthplace of Karl May, the most widely read German writer. The exhibition is dedicated to the life, work, and impact of Karl May.
The Karl May House in Hohenstein-Ernstthal is a listed weaver's house that is more than 300 years old. A commemorative plaque was affixed to the façade in 1929, the very first monument to Karl May. It has been a museum since 1985. During the walking tour, you can explore the Karl May phenomenon – what makes him so special, was he an adventurer or an impostor, and why are his stories still read and performed on open-air stages today, more than 100 years after his death? Discover Karl May's adventurous life, which began in abject poverty in the Erzgebirge, led him to take up the profession of teacher, and, after years of crime and prison sentences, made him one of the most successful German writers. Learn more about Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, Karl May's most famous heroes. Find out whether Karl May actually visited America and the Orient. And marvel at the numerous translations of his works, theatrical performances, and film adaptations. Come to Karl May's birthplace and immerse yourself in his adventurous world!
