Ride from Sapporo to Tadao Ando's Hill of the Buddha, the Jozankei gorge, Lake Toya's caldera panorama, and the steaming Hell Valley of Noboribetsu on a full-day tour with a driver-guide.
The following itinerary stop order and times may be adjusted for traffic, weather, and conditions on the day. If a core itinerary change or cancellation occurs, travelers can receive a full refund.
08:20 | Sapporo Station North Exit | Departure
Meet at the group bus stop by Sapporo Station North Exit . This is a shared tour on a fixed schedule; please arrive 10 minutes early; the bus cannot wait for latecomers.
09:00 | Hill of the Buddha | 40 minutes
At Makomanai Takino Cemetery, only the head of a 13.5-meter, 1,500-ton stone Buddha rises above a lavender-planted dome designed by architect Tadao Ando. There is no train to the site and local buses run about once an hour, so a direct coach from Sapporo is the simplest way to visit. Approach through the water garden and a 40-meter concrete tunnel until the statue is revealed beneath the open sky. In summer, some 150,000 lavender plants cover the hill, peaking mid to late July. This is an active cemetery, so keep noise down. Admission to the Buddha hall (JPY 1,000, free for elementary school age and under) is included in the "with admission" option, or payable on-site if you book the tour-only option.
10:15 | Jozankei Futami Park | 40 minutes
This riverside park sits in the Jozankei hot spring area just outside Sapporo. Its name means "two people viewing together" - couples who take in the scenery here are said to enjoy lasting happiness. Walk the paths along the Toyohira River gorge, cross the Futami Suspension Bridge, and find the kappa statue that symbolizes Jozankei.
12:10 | Lake Toya Observation Deck | 30 minutes
Look out over Lake Toya, a caldera lake in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, with the Nakajima Islands at its center and Mt. Usu and Showa Shinzan beyond. Deep and geothermally warmed, it is one of Japan's northernmost lakes that rarely freezes, so the panorama stays open even in winter.
12:55 | Lake Toya Lakeside | 70 minutes, lunch at your own expense
Choose freely among lakeshore restaurants and cafes - kaisendon seafood bowls, ramen, tonkatsu, curry, and set meals are all nearby, then stroll the promenade.
14:15 | Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch & Mt. Usu | 60 minutes
At the foot of Showa Shinzan, observe and feed dozens of Hokkaido brown bears at the ranch, or ride the Mt. Usu Ropeway for panoramic views over Lake Toya. Both are optional and payable on-site; the 60-minute stop allows time for one of the two, so pick the bears or the summit view on the day. Never feed the bears your own food.
16:00 | Noboribetsu Hell Valley | 40 minutes
Jigokudani, the volcanic crater that feeds the famous Noboribetsu hot springs, is filled with steaming vents, bubbling pools, and sulfurous streams. Explore the boardwalk trails; paths can be wet and slippery, so wear sturdy footwear and stay on the walkways.
18:00 | Sapporo Station North Exit | End of tour
The tour ends where it began, at Sapporo Station North Exit.
