The Streets in Between

Between the official stops, the walk itself tells the story. A chapati maker flattens dough on a hot iron griddle. Women braid hair outside a home painted bright yellow. Children in school uniforms navigate the alleys like they own them, because they do.

Furthermore, you pass communal water taps shared by dozens of households, informal savings groups meeting under tarpaulins, and small grocery stalls that stock everything a family needs within arm's reach. The Challenges — Seen Honestly

Kisenyi's drainage and sanitation challenges are visible and real. This tour does not hide them. Open channels run beside footpaths. Communal taps serve many more households than they were built for.

However, what is equally visible is the response. Youth skilling programs train school leavers in trades that directly address those gaps. Women's savings circles fund incremental improvements block by block. Local advocacy groups push for better infrastructure investment from the city authority. Additionally, these grassroots efforts are often more effective than top-down programs because they are designed by the people most affected.

Therefore, what you witness in Kisenyi is not a community in distress, it is a community in motion.
The Paper Bead Cooperative

One of the most memorable stops on the tour is a visit to a women's cooperative where jewelry is made entirely from recycled paper. Old magazines, packaging scraps, and calendar pages are cut into strips, rolled by hand, sealed, and strung into bracelets and necklaces of real colour and craft.

The cooperative solves two problems at once, reducing paper waste and generating reliable income for member households. Furthermore, the finished pieces are sold to buyers across Uganda and internationally, connecting Kisenyi directly to a global market. You can watch the process from raw material to finished product. You can also buy directly from the makers, with full transparency about where the money goes.
