Explore the Ashlar Route of Arequipa on a guided tour. Visit the Añashuayco quarry, walk through the Quebrada de Culebrillas canyon, and discover ancient petroglyphs.
Meeting point in Plaza de Armas. Our first stop is the traditional neighborhood, which has one of the most outstanding churches of regional mestizo art, built in 1750. The square has a vantage point with a view of the city and its three volcanoes: Misti (5,825 meters above sea level), Chachani (6,075 meters above sea level), and Pichu Pichu (5,554 meters above sea level). There are also artisan centers nearby. Then we'll head to the Añashuayco Quarries, located in the Cerro Colorado district, where 500 stonemasons work, people who, day after day, with their pick and chisel and supported by a rope, extract the ashlar. Currently, the quarries from which this white material is extracted have also been converted into a tourist circuit where the natural landscape and living culture are on display. Arequipa is known as the White City because of the mansions, monuments, and temples built with ashlar. In the Quebrada de Cortadores, the façade of the Church of La Compañía de Jesús is on display. The process for making the ashlar is explained, as well as the start of the cutting of the ignimbrite, also known as white volcanic stone, with an explanation of each step by a master stonemason.
Later, we will go to Quebrada de Culebrillas, a quarry that is not in operation, but which we can explore for 20 minutes through a small canyon formed by water erosion. At the end of the tour, we will see some petroglyphs such as the sun, the moon, the two-headed snake, and camelids, among others, which we can admire and photograph while our tour guide gives us some explanations. Then, at the top of the canyon, we can build our own wish stones before returning to the city.
