Embark on a one-day trip from Brasov on the famous Transfagarasan Road to Balea Lake and Balea Waterfall. Stretching 90 km (56 mi) across the Făgăraș Mountains, this road connects the historic regions of Muntenia (Wallachia) and Transylvania.
Built between 1970 and 1974, the Transfagarasan is a paved road featuring numerous hairpin turns, sharp descents, and viaducts. Key sights along the route include the stunning Bâlea Lake (at 2,042 m), the longest road tunnel in Romania (884 m), Bâlea Waterfall, Vidraru Dam, and Poenari Castle (associated with Vlad the Impaler).
Famously dubbed "the best road in the world" by Top Gear, it attracts thrill-seekers, cyclists, and tourists for its dramatic scenery. Due to extreme weather conditions, the high-altitude section is typically only open from July to October. Known as a strategic military route built under the communist regime, its construction involved immense sacrifice.
