We organise a day birding around Kigali (Nyandungu Eco-park or Umusambi Village) and Bugesera wetlands to see rare White-collared Oliveback, Papyrus Gonolek and Papyrus Canary.
Kigali city is the administrative and business capital of Rwanda. A number of wetlands were restored around Kigali to improve flood resilience, enhance ecosystems, and create public green spaces. Additional to that, Kigali is not far from Bugesera District, a home to numerous lakes and extensive wetlands. The main birding sites around Kigali are Umusambi Village, Nyandungu Urban Wetland Eco-tourism Park, Gikondo Wetland and wetlands in Bugesera.
Birding around Kigali is an introduction to birdlife of East Africa as these places are a mix of habitats including grassland, wetlands and lakes (ponds). Birding at one (or all) of the mentioned sites, birders have an opportunity to see rare birds like White-collared Oliveback, Papyrus Gonolek and Papyrus Canary.
Wetlands in Bugesera i.e Gashora (1 hour drive from Kigali) is a home to watebirds like Eurasian Moorhen, African Swamphen, Blue-billed Teal, Black Crake, White-faced Whistling Duck, Fulvous Whistling duck, Yellow-billed duck, etc. Gashora is one of the migration flyways and you can see migrant species like Wood Sandpiper, Marsh Sandpiper, etc.
We offer a half or a full day birding excursion around Kigali. With a half day birding we can have a morning or afternoon birding at one of the mentioned sites and with a full day we can combine 2 of these sites:
1. A half day at Gashora Wetland can yield in over 70 bird species, mainly waterbirds and wetland birds
2. A half day at Nyandungu Eco-park can yield in over 60 species
3. If you have few hours, we can go at Umusambi Village, a sanctuary of Grey-crowned Crane, and a home to over 100 bird species
4. If you have a full day, we can combine one of these site in morning and add another site after lunch.
Our services include transport, expert bird guide, mineral water and lunch. After birding we drive you at the departure place or drop you at the airport.

All the mentioned birding sites are easy to walk and are accessible along the year. You can bring walking sticks, hat, gloves, gaiters (as sometimes we can walk in muddy areas), folding chairs (optional), snacks (optional), etc.

- Our cost varies depending on the number of people joining the excursion; the minimum people is one person (USD 250) and maximum is 6 people (USD 125/Person). The cost includes ground transport, entrance to the birding sites, experienced bird guide, mineral water, lunch and airport drop off. We are happy to be informed on number of people joining the tour at least a day before to work on the logistics mainly transportation. We are flexible on meals as we arrange the lunch break according to the client needs and choice of the dish.

- The cost excludes gratuities, alcohol drink, international flight, visa, porters and other extra activities other than birding. Some of these activities are extra and are considered as optional activities!
- All Tourists get visa on arrival in Rwanda; they can also apply online visa. Members of Commonwealth, Organisation International de la Francophonie and African Union get a free tourist visa (maximum 30 days) on arrival. The price of a visa to tourists from other countries is between 50$ and 100$.
