Musanze: Twin Lakes Canoe & Sunset Volcano Views

Glide across Rwanda's Twin Lakes in a traditional wooden canoe at golden hour. Volcano views, local fishermen, and serene waters - authentic Musanze sunset escape.
I grew up fishing these lakes with my father. Let me show you my home, not the tourist version.

We start at 2:00 PM from Musanze town. We meet in Musanze town and take local transport together about 30 minutes through potato fields and small villages to my favorite Twin Lakes viewpoint. From this hill you can see both lakes at once - Burera on one side, Ruhondo on the other - with Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo volcanoes in the background. Most visitors miss this spot because there is no sign - we locals know it.

We walk down a small path to the shore of Lake Ruhondo. A fisherman from our cooperative waits with his traditional wooden canoe. This is the same type of canoe families here have used for generations. He paddles, you sit in the middle and enjoy. It is quiet - no motor sound - so you can hear birds and water.

We spend about 90 minutes on the water. The water is very clear, sometimes you see small fish below. We pass near one of the small islands and I explain how families live there. I will share the old story of why Burera and Ruhondo are called Twin Lakes but never meet. Along the way we often see kingfishers, herons, and sometimes the African fish eagle - you can bring binoculars to share. If you like, you can try paddling for a few minutes, the fishermen like to teach guests.

Around 5:30 PM is sunset. The light changes, the volcanoes turn pink and orange and reflect on the lake. This is the best time for photos. I know the spots where the light hits best and I am happy to take photos of you - many guests say these become their favorite Rwanda pictures.

We paddle slowly back as the sky gets dark and we take local transport back to Musanze, arriving around 6:30 PM, in time for dinner.

Meeting Point: We meet at Musanze town center (I will send you Google Maps pin after booking). We then take local transport together to the lakes.

Transport: Transport to the lakes is NOT included in the price, to keep the tour affordable and support local drivers. I will assist you to arrange local transport (moto or shared taxi) on the day - it is easy, cheap and part of the local experience. If you have your own car/moto, you can follow. If you stay outside Musanze (like Kigali), message me after booking and I can help arrange private transport at extra cost.
