This expansive tour is a seamless blend of comfortable vehicle travel and invigorating walks, carefully planned to display the historical, cultural, and scenic vistas beauty of the “White City.”
The “Big Belgrade Tour” is your gateway to an exhaustive exploration of “The White City.” This detailed tour is a combination of a guided vehicle tour highlighting key urban areas and a leisurely walking tour filled with scenic vistas.
Our walking Belgrade tour begins at Studentski Trg, specifically in front of the Captain Mišin Building, home to the University of Belgrade’s Rectorate. Kicking off at 09:00 AM, we will start with the history of Roman baths located in Studentski Trg, then stroll past the echoes of Roman streets near Rajićeva Shopping Center. As we walk through Kalemegdan Park, the historical “Cvijeta Zuzorić” pavilion, once a beacon for the Museum of Contemporary Art, greets us.
Passing through Leopold’s Gate and the Barbican Zindan Gate, you’ll hear significant tales of the Church of Ružica and it’s resistance. Afterwards, our path continues through Despot’s Gate into the Upper Town, showcasing the beautifully restored tower now serving as the observatory for the “Ruđer Bošković” Astronomical Society.
Our Belgrade tour then brings us to the Victory Monument, adorned with a nude male figure wielding an eagle and sword—a subject of many local legends. Bypassing the misnamed Roman Well, our journey proceeds to the King’s Gate before transitioning back to a vehicle for exploring New Belgrade and Zemun. Crossing the iconic Branko Bridge, we delve into the Pannonian Plain’s rich history, once a vast sea 30 million years ago. A drive past the “Ušće” Business Center, a former political hub, leads us into the charming old town of Zemun. Here, we explore from the historical Stara Kapetanija up to the Gardoš Tower, the last of the original seven towers built on the Austro-Hungarian borders, withstanding numerous conflicts and preserving its heritage.
Descending from the historical Gardoš Tower, we stroll through Gospodska Street, past the old Church of St. Nicholas, and converge at the main square, encircled by the Roman Catholic Church and the bustling City Market. Resuming our vehicle tour, we capture sights of notable buildings like the Air Force Command and Zemun Gymnasium. Our panoramic view of New Belgrade reveals the district’s post-war architectural evolution. As we cross the Gazela Bridge, glimpses of the new Belgrade Waterfront unfold.
Our final stops include the Museum of Yugoslavia and the serene House of Flowers, where we reflect on Tito’s legacy and his global connections. Following a refreshing lunch, Avala welcomes us with its historic TV tower and the poignant Monument to the Unknown Hero. The tour gracefully concludes at the majestic Church of Saint Sava and ultimately at Republic Square, the heart of Belgrade, flanked by the National Museum and National Theatre.
