Explore the world's largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. The crater was formed two to three million years ago when a large volcano erupted and collapsed on itself. Several springs drain into the crater and are important water sources for animals and local Maasai, who for centuries grazed their cattle in the crater but are no longer permitted. These springs are also the main water source for the seasonal salt lake in the center of the crater. Around twenty-five thousand animals live in the crater, most of them being ungulates, including the black rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, hippopotamus, blue wildebeest, zebra, eland, gazelles, and Waterbucks. The Great Migration passes through Ngorongoro Conservation Area and even though it's considered a "natural enclosure", twenty percent of the wildebeest and half of the zebra population leave the crater during the rainy season, but the Cape buffalo stay. The Mduma's shrew is endemic to the crater. Predators in the crater include cheetah, leopard, spotted hyena, serval, wild dog, and lion, the crater has one of the densest populations of lions on Earth. To the west of the crater, there is the Ndutu Lake area which has large populations of lions and cheetahs. Hartebeest, spotted hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, and servals are also common in this area. Lake Magadi, which is southwest of the crater, is often inhabited by thousands of flamingoes.
