Step inside a restored 17th century watermill at the foot of the Lierza waterfall. See the historic interiors and learn how corn flour for polenta is still produced on selected occasions.
Visit the Molinetto della Croda, a historic watermill in Refrontolo, set at the foot of the Lierza stream waterfall. One of the few watermills still in working order, it offers a close look at rural life, local history, and traditional milling in a striking natural setting.

As you explore the building, discover a characteristic example of 17th-century rural architecture, constructed in several phases directly against the bare rock, the “croda”, that gives the site its name. Over time, the mill was expanded to include living quarters for the millers’ families, who lived here under modest conditions and at constant risk of flooding, including major floods in 1941 and 1953.

The mill produced its last flour in 1953 before falling into abandonment. It has since been carefully restored, with its original character preserved.

On the ground floor, the millstone has been faithfully reconstructed and made operational again. Depending on the occasion, you may be able to watch it in action as it continues to grind corn flour for polenta, as it has since the 1600s.

During your visit, you can also access the interior rooms and view seasonal exhibitions.

The experience ends at the mill, with the option to continue independently on a short walk toward the waterfall or along longer nearby routes.
