Castel Sant’Angelo was built in the 2nd century A.D. as the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian and his family, originally known as Mole Adriana. In the 6th century, it was transformed into a fortress to defend Rome and became known as a castellum.
After the legendary appearance of the Archangel Michael on its summit during the plague of 590 A.D., it was given its present name, Castellum Sancti Angeli (Castle of the Holy Angel).
Over the centuries, the castle served as a powerful fortress and refuge for the popes, with added walls and bastions, while also becoming a luxurious papal residence. In the 17th century, as political conditions changed, it was converted into a political prison. In 1925, it was finally opened to the public as a National Museum.
