Train Like a Sumo Wrestler in Ginza, Tokyo

Step into the real world of sumo with a hands-on training experience led by a former professional rikishi. This is not a sumo show or staged performance. It is an interactive workshop where you learn the movements, manners, and spirit behind Japan’s national sport from someone who has lived the life of a professional wrestler.

Your experience takes place at Tokyo Sumo Festival, inside Ginza Inz 1 B1 in central Ginza. The venue is easy to add to a day of Tokyo sightseeing, shopping, and dining. It is close to Yurakucho Station and Ginza-itchome Station, about 5 minutes on foot from Tokyo International Forum, and within easy reach of Hibiya, Marunouchi, Tokyo Station, Kabuki-za Theatre, GINZA SIX, Tsukiji Outer Market, and the Imperial Palace area. From Asakusa, Shibuya, or Shinjuku, you can reach the venue by train or subway.

After arrival, your instructor introduces the basics of sumo culture, etiquette, and training. Learn why wrestlers clap, stamp their feet, bow, and move in a special way before practice. Then step into the dohyo area and try the same fundamental movements used by rikishi in daily training.

Practice shiko, the powerful leg-stomping movement that builds balance and strength. Try suri-ashi, the sliding footwork that helps wrestlers stay low and stable. Learn simple pushing and stance exercises inspired by asa-geiko, the morning training routine of professional sumo stables. The movements are explained clearly, and the pace can be adjusted, so beginners, families, couples, friends, and solo travelers can all enjoy the experience.

One highlight is the chance to learn directly from a former top-division wrestler. Instead of only watching sumo from a distance, you can ask questions, feel the physicality of the sport, and understand how much technique, discipline, and respect are hidden behind each movement.

This activity is inclusive and beginner-friendly. Women and children can join, and no previous sports experience is required. Guests who want a light cultural activity can participate at a comfortable pace, while others can enjoy stronger training.

All guests can enjoy chanko-nabe free of charge. Chanko-nabe is a hearty hot pot traditionally associated with sumo wrestlers, and it is served as part of the sumo experience. Paid food menu items may also be available as optional extras, depending on the selected plan. Other extras, such as a kesho-mawashi photo opportunity or a signed handprint shikishi board, vary by option, so please check the selected plan before booking.

The location is convenient for travelers staying or sightseeing around Ginza, Yurakucho, Tokyo Station, Hibiya, Marunouchi, Tsukiji, Nihonbashi, Shimbashi, Roppongi, Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Asakusa. It is a memorable cultural activity before dinner in Ginza, after Tsukiji, or between shopping in Ginza and Marunouchi.

Come ready to move, learn, take photos, and discover sumo in a personal and unforgettable way.
